Where is the Logic in Proofs?
(2011) Proceedings of the 14th Annual Conference on Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education
One aspect of my research focuses on finding the logic in proofs. I have developed a coding scheme intended on separating "common sense" logic and predicate and propositional calculus, among other separations. For more information please read my proposal and the paper (attached below).

Conference Presentations/Invited Talks
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional
November 2nd-4th, 2011 (Albuquerque, NM)
Dr. Karen Trujillo and I each presented a Math Snack lesson about number line and ratio, respectively. We filmed the lessons with students and they appear on my website. It was well-attended, and hopefully well-received!
International Society of Technology in Education
June 26th-29th, 2011 (Philadelphia, PA)
In this conference, Dr. Karen Trujillo, Dr. Ted Stanford, and I presented two model lessons along with the creation of Math Snacks. The model lessons had educators with computers located in the middle of the room, with a gallery of educators observing. Overall, about 150 conference-goers participated in the event. My lesson dealt with ratio, and I encouraged all, even the gallery, to participate.
Legacy of R.L. Moore
June 2nd-4th, 2011 (Washington, DC)
At the R.L. Moore Legacy Conference I presented the talk, "An Examination of Logic in Student-Constructed Proofs." The presentation can be downloaded below, and a video of the presentation can be viewed at the R.L. Moore Conference website.

Innovate + Educate New Mexico
April 29th-30th, 2011 (Albuquerque, NM)
This was the first solo conference presentation done by me. In it, over 40 participants were explained how the math snacks were created. These teachers and educators then saw a couple of math snacks and asked questions. The conference was a technology and education conference. More information on the conference can be found at their website.
STEM - New Mexico
April 2nd, 2011 (Las Cruces, NM)
In this conference Dr. Karen Trujillo and I presented on the Math Snacks in a workshop-like presentation. Each teacher had the chance to see or play a math snack and then discussed the creation and reasoning of the snacks.
Nepalese Student Association
March 19th, 2011 (Las Cruces, NM)
I was asked to participate in the conference, "Nepalese Diaspora: Hostland Challenges and Homeland Interests," by Deepak Basyal to demonstrate the awareness for mathematics education in Nepal. The conference was attended by many Nepalese in the southwest, including Arizona, Texas, and Colorado. I presented on the talk "Where is the Logic?" located in the RUME 2011 conference section. Their conference website is located here.
Southwest Local Algebra Meeting
March 5th-6th, 2011 (Las Cruces, NM)
At this regional Algebra conference I participated in three poster sessions, presenting my research on the logic in homology proofs using the same coding as used in my previous talks. The results ended up being quite similar even though the subjects were different. The title of the talk is: "Where is the Logic in Homology Proofs?" Below you will find the poster presented:

Graduate Research Arts Symposium
March 1st, 2011 (Las Cruces, NM)
At this conference, I presented my doctoral research on logic and proofs: "Where is the Logic in Proofs?" More information on this project can be found in the RUME conference below.
Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education
February 24th-27th, 2011 (Portland, OR)
I presented one third of my doctoral research on logic and proofs: "Where is the Logic in Proofs?" I concluded, through a self-created coding scheme, that less than 2% of final written proofs need "formal logic." More information on this project can be found below. The conference website has more information on this conference in undergraduate mathematics education.

Hawaii International Conference on Education
January 4th-7th, 2011 (Honolulu, HI)
My colleagues and I presented the concept, theoretical perspective, and products from the Math Snacks NSF grant. Below you will find the Power Point presentation. We also published a paper in the conference proceedings, which can be found below. More information on the conference can be found here.
